What is SQLite?¶
SQLite is a small, fast, self-contained SQL database engine. Unlike most SQL databases, it has no separate server process: it reads and writes directly to an ordinary file on disk, so there is nothing to install, configure, or administer. This blend of simplicity and reliability has made SQLite the most widely deployed database engine in the world — it ships inside virtually every smartphone, web browser, and operating system.
Key characteristics:
- Serverless and zero-configuration — no server to run and nothing to set up or administer.
- Single-file databases — an entire database (tables, indexes, views, and triggers) lives in one cross-platform file that you can copy, e-mail, or back up like any other file.
- Transactional (ACID) — changes are atomic, consistent, isolated, and durable, even if the application crashes or the power fails mid-write.
- Full-featured SQL — most of the SQL standard, including views, triggers, foreign keys, full-text search, window functions, common table expressions, and JSON functions.
- Small and fast — a compact library that outperforms client/server engines for most everyday operations.
- Exhaustively tested — SQLite has one of the most thorough test suites of any software, with 100% branch test coverage.
- Stable, public-domain format — the file format is documented and backwards-compatible, and the source code is in the public domain, free for any use.
