Exporting data to XML

Export the contents of a data grid to an XML file — a portable, structured format that many applications and programming languages can read.

To export a grid to XML:

  1. Right-click the grid and choose Export to XML.
  2. In the XML export options dialog, name the destination file, choose which kind of XML to write, and click OK.

The two kinds of XML file

  • Data (every column, with its type) — a data packet that names each column and its type, and carries every column of the dataset. This is the default, and it is the one that can be read straight back by Importing data from a file.
  • Formatted, as shown in the grid (adds a .xsl file) — a rendering of the grid rather than its data: styled cells, the columns you can see in the order you can see them, and a companion .xsl stylesheet written beside the file so that a browser shows it looking like the grid did.

Note

The formatted file is not a spreadsheet, whatever its extension suggests — Excel will not open it as a workbook. To get a spreadsheet, use Exporting data to Excel or ODS.

Keep the .xsl file beside the .xml one. On its own the XML still holds every value, but a browser has nothing to lay it out with.
