Editing indexes

Indexes speed up searches and sorting on the columns you look up most often. They are managed on the Indexes sub-tab of the Design tab.

To add an index:

  1. Click Add to open the index properties dialog.

The index properties dialog The index properties dialog

  2. Set the index's name, whether it is Unique, an optional WHERE clause (for a partial index), and the columns it covers.

  3. Add columns with Add, remove them with Delete, and reorder them with Move Up and Move Down — column order affects how the index can be used.
  4. Click OK.

To modify an index: select it, click Modify, adjust its properties, and click OK.

To delete an index: select it, click Delete, and confirm.

Note

You must add at least one column to the table before you can create an index.

Indexes that SQLite creates automatically for unique constraints (named sqlite_autoindex_<table>_<n>) cannot be edited or deleted directly. To change one, edit or delete its unique constraint instead.

For a known SQLite quirk related to primary keys, see Known Issues.
